      • Product Description:

Branch Hill Pond: Evening and Cloud Study
        John Constable (1776–1837)
Oil on paper. Britain, about 1821-22

Presented here as a pair of small canvas prints are two sketches that originally shared the front and back of a single piece of paper. They depict a view in the vicinity of Jack Straw’s Castle, Hampstead, and a cloud study.

Outdoor sketching was central to Constable’s working method. These incredible sketches capture the changes of weather and light in the British countryside. They demonstrate Constable’s innovative and poetic evocations of land, sea and sky.  His naturalistic representation of the landscape and use of broad brushstrokes and impasto technique challenged conventions and brought the genre of outdoor oil sketching to a new level of refinement.

Canvas prints stretched on a wooden frame.

        Ready to hang.

Selected to celebrate the V&A exhibition Constable - The Making of a Master
