This handmade silk scarf has been created by X+Q Art for the V&A to celebrate the Masterpieces of Chinese Paintings exhibition, 26 October 201319 January 2014. X+Q have taken inspiration from pieces within the exhibition, the V&As collection and their national traditions of fine painting and craft.

X+Q Art was founded by leading contemporary Chinese artists Xiang Jing and Qu Guangci to create limited edition sculpture, fashion accessories and gift items based on their own renowned artwork. As well as being the initials of the two artists, the brand name is an interesting play on words in Chinese: X and Q in characters have the symbolic meaning of rarity and exquisiteness, which the brand stands for.

For Landscape Mash-Up, X+Q have brought together Visiting a Friend in the Mountains, a late 16th century scroll held in the V&As collections, together with Saying Farewell at Xunyang, by Chou Ying, kindly loaned by the Nelson Atkins Museum, Kansas City, Missouri.

The scarves are hand crafted using 100% heavy 16 Mumi Class A Chinese silk, which has been sourced by the artists giving the scarves a specific lustre and luxurious hand feel. A hand printing process has been utilized with special pleating along the edge of the scarf using a unique historical craft. The pleaters adopt a Zen like philosophy to the making of the scarf; only ten pleats per day.

"It is an interesting phenomenon to see the V&A hosting the magnificent Masterpieces of Chinese Paintings exhibition, showing that culture transcends boundaries of time and space. Its a real delight to make a contemporary interpretation of the traditional Chinese culture for X+Q Art, a Chinese brand and me as a Chinese artist, thanks to this V&A platform."

        Qu Guangci

        Created exclusively for the V&A.
